In 1942 the USA was at war with Japan. They invented a secret weapon – a shell would be dropped from a bomber that would release hundreds of incendiary bombs.
These bombs would fly slowly through the air and make their way into the nooks and crannies of Japanese buildings.
Once safely nestled, the bombs would detonate, simultaneously starting fires all over the city. The weapon – code named Project X-Ray – was scrapped, despite costing over $2 million.
It was just too hard to get the bats (to which the incendiary bombs were attached) to do what they were supposed to do. The inventor of the bat bomb went on to develop a fried chicken vending machine.
