History Fact 9 June 2017
On 18 August 1976 two US soldiers were murdered by North Korean soldiers while trimming a tree in the Demilitarized Zone separating North and South Korea. The US responded with operation “Paul Bunyan” – possibly the largest operation to fell a single tree in History. 24 UNC vehicles took 800 men to the location, all heavily armed and some proficient in Tae Kwon Do. The men were backed up by attack helicopters, fighter jets, B52 bombers and an aircraft carrier.
The tree was then successfully cut down.
