On this day 10th September 1515 Thomas Wolsey (1473-1530) was invested as a Cardinal of the Roman Catholic Church.
He was Archbishop of York and was also Lord Bishop of Durham from 1523-1529. When Wolsey failed to secure King Henry VIII’s annulment to Catherine of Aragon it caused his downfall.
He was stripped of his office as Lord Chancellor and his property, including Hampton Court Palace was confiscated by the crown.
He died at Leicester on his way to London to face trail for high treason after his spectacular fall from power.
