I am talking about Downtown Abbey….
I had always poo pooed the idea of watching it as something my mother would watch and she enthused about it so much, but I thought nope not for me.
Then my mother came up with a suggestion….watch it for one hour she said and if you are not happy with it then switch off…..
I am now on Series 3 Episode 4 and my god it is one of the best things I have seen in a long long time.
The characters are complex and some you like and some you don’t like. I think the Earl of Grantham needs a clip around the ear but he is played fantastically and then we have the daughters who play the part great, and Dame Maggie Smith as the Dowager Countess. She is one of our finest actresses and she has taken to this part like it was made for her. She is awesome.
The staff downstairs are full of plots and twists and they are all acted brilliantly.
The stories on each episode have you on the edge of your seat such as Lord Grantham kissing a maid and you think…oh my Lord Grantham is such a disaster. He loses the family money, refuses to move from his aristocratic perch and all the pain in the family is his fault but he does it with such Gentlemanly manners you could chuck your shoe at the TV whilst listening to his so sorry speech.
I had the delight as I got older watching Tenko and Upstairs Downstairs have avoided them like the plague when I was younger but they are fab to watch. Although I am a huge fan of the likes of It Ain’t Half Hot Mum and Dad’s Army, and for me the acting in Downtown Abbey reminds of this and it is quite simply a masterpiece.
I have never taken to the writer Julian Fellowes but he has pulled a blinder with this one and if you have not watched it, then please watch it and ignore your partner if their eyes roll as Mr Points of Sue did just that but he is actually starting to like it, much to the disgust of our sons but there you go…..when they are married they will have to watch things they don’t like for the sake of their other half, but even Mr Points of Sue had to admit the acting is brilliant and the cast has been put together wonderfully.
They really compliment each other and it is something that once started has to be seen right through to the end. By the way the houses are gorgeous, the dresses are beautiful, the dressing for dinner is a bygone age that I love to see and the whole thing is a total success from beginning to end.
I know this is something I will watch again and again as I am now a huge Downtown fan. It is awesome.
