Britain’s first black Archbishop has been snubbed and not offered a peerage.

Archbishop of York, John Sentamu, 71, was expected to receive a life peerage so he would be able to continue sitting in the House of Lords after he retired on June 7

I was so delighted that John Sentamu was made Archbishop of York and to be honest was hoping he would become the Archbishop of Canterbury, as can you imagine how different and wonderful the weekly sermons would have been if he had been enthroned in Canterbury. It is an opportunity so missed and what would that have said to the world!!!

To then find out that he has been snubbed for a peerage is a total disappointment and the backlash is well deserved, as if anyone should be in the House of Lords its John Sentamu.

To say that it is because they want to slim down the Lords is the worst excuse I have ever heard and it is a lie. We read how some people get their peerage by buying it with a nice donation to the party in power, or because they are a mate. For god sake even the PMs brother has gotten one…for what? Mrs May’s husband is going in there …… all because he told her stand down…..is that it???? Some of the most undeserving people have been sent up to the Lords and it is not representative of loyal people.

My husband served in the forces for 23 years…..shouldn’t he get one for loyalty to Queen and Country, and he fought in a war too…..didn’t hand over £2 or 3 million that could be a tax write off….but actually did something, and it is galling that we have so many people sitting in the Lords who really shouldn’t be there, or anywhere near the Palace of Westminster. It is a travesty.

This is why the obvious snub of a man who has done more to not only the Christian faith but also who has shown that unlike a lot of people think, that we are not racist is wrong. I am deeply disappointed as he would have been awesome in the Lords because he is a man of the people, and the people admire him and maybe it is about time someone who is popular was actually put to the Lords.

I hope the Prime Minister changes his mind as it is not right. I backed him on denying John Bercow a peerage as he actively worked against the people, but John Sentamu is nothing like Bercow and he thinks of the people above all else.

Whoever is advising the Prime Minister needs to butt out as this is what it shows….racism….as to deny this man of God his place because of “needing to slim down the Lords” is a stupid, stupid lie and it is racist and it needs to be stopped and if necessary kick some old duffer out or Phillip May as he definitely doesn’t belong there, and the former Archbishop does.
