Britain will veto any application by Russia to re-join the G7 after President Trump appeared to invite President Putin to a summit this year. The statement from the prime minister’s office came after President Trump told reporters on Saturday that the present line-up of Germany, Japan, France, Britain, Canada, Italy and the US was “a very outdated group of countries”. He proposed including Australia, South Korea, India and Russia. (Times 02/06/2020).

Trump and Putin

I would wholeheartedly agree with letting India, Australia and South Korea in as they have become successful countries and ones not hell bent on dominating others, but not Russia.

Russia has annexed the Crimea and if we let Putin attend as anything other than a guest then we are making a mockery of outrage. It is already ridiculous that we only send a STERN letter and nothing else, but to reward him with a seat is almost akin to saying “well its ok Vladimir, my old chum you can do what you want and ignore any strongly worded letter”…..remind you of any times in the 30s where we ignored a country hell bent on power at the world’s peril?

Putin is already changing the Russian Constitution so that he can remain in power until 2036, the same move as the Chinese President who is in power for life. It is dictatorship in any language and we cannot reward these dictators by allowing them into any democratic process. This is the problem we have now and allowing them more and more creeping advances will create bigger and bigger problems.

Thankfully Boris Johnson can see that….and the G7 consists of Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom and the United States, and Canada agrees with Boris and the United Kingdom. So two countries singing from the same hymn sheet.

We cannot award bullies who frighten their own people into obedience and then invade countries with no justification. It is wrong and there is no place in any democratic meetings of Governments for countries like Russia and China.
